Health officials in the US are concerned hospitals could have to treat thousands of coronavirus patients over the coming weeks as more states experience a rise in cases.

The US reported more than 63,000 on a single day this week – the largest daily jump since the summer.

Public health officials said the bulk of the new infections are taking place in rural areas.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention estimated between 1900 to 6700 people could be hospitalised per day by early November and predicted 20,000 fatalities in the next three weeks.
